So I guess my questions are! Do I need Capture? Do I need the ultimate collection. Money is not the greatest consideration but I would rather not pay hundreds of dollars for something I don’t need. What do you think??? Hi Carmela, If you are already using Lightroom and are comfortable with it, then there is absolutely no reason or advantage for you to own Capture NX2.

Hi Michael, Sorry for the delayed response. NX2 is a great value and lets you hit the ground running very fast to create good results thanks to the power of Nik’s U-Point technology. Lightroom with the Nik suite is going to be sufficent for many, but when it is used with Photoshop you have the added benefit of using layer masks to selectively remove the impact of the filters in a way that in some cases might be faster or more effective than using U-Point controls. That’s its primiary benefit, but that’s a lot of money to pay to get that benefit.

I own Lightroom 2. I still can’t live without Lightroom though as it is my image management library and I generally use it to make final adjustments before printing. I reliazed very soon that image processing software is must for every DSLR owner to get the best result. So, i decided to buy one. I have two options.

Capture NX 2 or 2. I am asking this because Will Processing tiff file give the same quality of processing RAW file? No doubt, both offer good value for the money. A few months after my purchase, someone suggested that I check out a trial version of CNX2 and closely compare preprocessed raw images in NX and LR side by side.

NX rendered images were appreciably more accurate with no color or tonal bleeding or coagulation vs. LR’s attempts. When I postprocess, I want to know that I’m working with the most accurate rendition of what my camera’s sensor captured. Granted, you can only see that by way of pixel peeping, but for me, that solidified my preference for CNX2. After years of fiddling with various open source, adobe and other software I now exclusively use Capture NX2 to convert my raw files It gives me instant control over light falloff, chromatic alberation, d-lighting feature, whitebalance love the channel multipliers!

And gives great colors by default. I would waste enormous amounts of time trying to make the images look good in adobe camera raw or lightroom. The trick is to use another program like acdsee to sort your photos and simply drag and drop files into capture nx to edit. In fact i’d erase all the features except the right panel because it’s the only thing i really need. The software is somewhat buggy, but the real problem are all the stupid interface mistakes.

Its more aggressive highlight warnings were awkward to use but resulted in a less overblown image the image above had no warnings in LR. To be fair comparing NX Studio with other tools make sense it they ar free too. NX Studio is a nice gift to Nikon users, with some limitations. If lens correction is important to you, and if you use non Nikon lenses on your camera body, there is an interesting alternative. Rawtherapee free can read the database of Adobe DNG converter free. The list of Nikon compatble lenses from Adobe is pretty extensive, That way if I share the file or whatever, or ingest it into another program, like LR, the coordinates wouild already be there.

And I don’t think this could be too difficult. I mean I assume that whether the GPS coordinates are there or not, the overall structure data fields are probably there in the file they’re just probably blank so adding this after that fact shouldn’t be too hard. I know that there are some tools people can use, but this is an OEM piece of software, and sometimes third-party apps writing back into proprietary RAW files can cause corruption.

You can put the location information by clicking on the location on a map or you can use a gpx track and the software can automatically extract the location information for all images in the folder. This is why i use it. No but I’m talking about NX saving it back into the RAW file so that other programs can ingest the data by simply reading the file. I think NX stores it in a separate file or a database on the computer.

Ah my mistake then. You could try to change the ‘Save Type’ setting to save adjustments to the original file instead of the sidecar file. That might work but i didn’t try it. At this point it’s not a big deal. In reality it’s also not a huge issue either as you can usually just give people a name of a place and let them find it on their own — the only times it’s helpful is if you’re off the beaten path a bit.

I would like to see the ability to add watermarks upon export in a future update in this program. I am transitioning to a phase where I might be sharing more of my photos on social media, where I would like to protect my best pictures through watermarking. Lightroom has a good system for adding watermarks, but I detest having to struggle through its catalog system to edit one picture.

There are a few things that were not carried over from CNX-D. Much has been mentioned about a loss of a convenient feature for exporting TIFFs to Photoshop and I noticed they removed an icon under the Adjustments tab for reverting back to your original image.

This revert back icon should be restored. Unfortunately again not thought to the end: – do not display more than 4 images at the same time – no simultaneous resizing of the selected images in the viewer – no catalog for quick display with reduced image size like Media Pro. Sylvain C, A lot has changed in Lightroom in 4 years! I find that most of the Adobe haters will spend thousands on useless gear, like lenses they don’t need or use, filters they don’t use, etc etc, and then go cheap on processing software which they would use. You might not use everything every time you sit down at the computer, but it’s sure nice to have it when you need it. After all, to put it in perspective, it costs less than 1 good quality UV filter per year.

Not really, it’s very tough to find clients that are willing to pay, I get the very odd paying job, mostly real estate photography, but for the most part I just do it for fun, it’s a great hobby. I installed NX studio over the weekend, and played with it a bit. I can definitely see functionality gaps between it and lightroom, and some are deal breakers for me, that is not to complain on this new initiative from Nikon, as I understand its in its early days, and will undergo transformations.

Still I agree with munn1 that I will be sticking with LR for now, as it is pretty good value, and I’m in a similar position of sometimes paid work corporate events , mostly hobby. I will definitely be keeping an eye on the Nikon software though. Very interesting. Unfortunately NX-Studio can’t open these files. I bake changes into ‘developed’ tif files and leave the original raw files alone.

There’s comfort in knowing that the raw file is always there, pristine and unchanged, whatever I might do to bugger things up. Also, Highlights recovery and Shadow Brightness tool is great. I recommend. For videos I use other applications. I agree. Got the free manufacturer-specific version with my Lumix and eventually paid for the all-format license. It’s not a slick product from the UI point of view but very powerful in terms of image manipulation.

I especially appreciate their informative and straightforward browser-based help system that downloads as a single file. IMHO, this is a great approach: develop an engine available to all manufacturers for ‘free’ distribution with support only for their specific RAW format and then sell the same thing with universal support.

I appreciate not having to learn something new for each camera brand and not paying subscription fees. I would say it is better in many ways, but as far as I remember NX2 has a little more advanced control points.

It is very good converting Nikon RAW files. And most of the Lightroom features are also in it. It will take some time to get used to using but it seems easier to use compared to Rawtherapee and Darktable Great job Nikon for this free software.

The Auto Retouch Brush allows you to remove dust spots, facial blemishes and other unwanted objects in the image. This shows a list-style view similar to what you see when browsing through your Mac OS Finder or Windows Explorer, with columns that display various parameters such as exposure information, file size, date modified, and more.

This is where the rubber meets the road, and fortunately, Nikon NX Studio can hold its own against the competition in virtually all the areas that matter. While some NX Studio features are not as refined as other programs and some tools are missing in action, what it gets right, it really gets right. While tools like a graduated filter, a radial filter , and an adjustment brush are missing, the options you do have should suffice for most photo editing.

You can even create multiple custom sets of adjustment options that include only the tools you use in specific scenarios. This is quite useful if you prefer different tools when editing landscapes compared to editing portraits. It allows you to click anywhere on your image and immediately have access to eight common editing sliders. Drag any of them to the right or left to increase or decrease that particular parameter.

The top slider adjusts the size of the area to which the edits will be applied. The Lightness, Chroma, and Hue Adjustment takes an innovative and highly effective approach to manipulating color.

While similar to the Hue, Saturation, and Luminance option in Lightroom , the Nikon NX Studio implementation offers useful options that professional and amateur photographers will appreciate. You can also change the angle of the rainbow, which means that your edits can be implemented more dramatically or more subtly.

Finally, Width lets you target your edits to either a very narrow or very wide band of colors. First, there is no Undo option. Yes, you read that right; instead of an Undo, you can create a saved state for your edits then revert to that saved state at any point, but an actual Undo feature is missing. Also, there is no History tool that shows you every edit and lets you step through them one by one.

While Nikon NX Studio is nondestructive and all your edits can be changed or removed at any time, a History feature would help when doing lots of in-depth changes. Other strange feature implementations are present, as well. The Retouch brush has no customization options at all other than its size. Finally, there is no way to make export presets, which could be a dealbreaker for those who rely on this feature in Lightroom and other programs.

Compared to a program like Lightroom, NX Studio might seem limited. Many of the drawbacks have workarounds or alternative methods of accomplishing the same task, even if it does involve some extra steps. And finally, there is always a learning curve with new programs. So are these missing features drawbacks, or is it more a matter of learning a new workflow?
