For me Bridge is much too slow for the big initial culling of new images. Photo Mechanic works much better, but sometimes I find the UI difficult and confusing to use. So I’m always open to find new software to handle this. Requiring an account to use this kind of software is a joke, especially when you can get Xnview, and many others, for free.
Bridge is not really free, as you need adobe software subscription for another of their products to use it. No you don’t. Bridge is indeed free. So is Lightroom, apart from the Develop and geo-localisation modules.
You can use the whole library and printing modules in Lightroom without paying. But Free looks compelling on some of my other rigs. Usage was only truly “free” in Quick View mode, which was pointless for presentation purposes. Using the “View” mode required a login, which I was fine with, but the process required loading a browser.
The browser login told me I could go back to the app, but the app kept reporting a network error. There was no “back” button so I had to quit. Uninstalled 5 min after install. No license required, no activation needed, no registration needed. They are pretty good in releasing updates year after year. Heck, it’s not that bad of an editor. Continues to amaze me after all these years. Simply a great photo utility program. Then, you can also select some rendering options below. It does display the raw data, and it does so really fast FastStone simply cannot compare.
But it is really bare bones. FastStone allows you to drag and drop files into a particular order, then batch rename them based on that dragged-and-dropped order. ACDSee’s calculation must be that some of these “triers” will turn into buyers for upgrades or other of their products, and I suspect it’s a good plan. From what I see here What I do not understand – looking at all the other offers of today: how are they going to sell other products e.
Pro at the higher price per license? Do they need more Ultimate users? A new version coming? I suspect the answer is, they want to get users using the ACDSee products and then have them upgrade every year or so.
I would imagine that a large base of existing users who are highly motivated to keep their version as up-to-date as possible are the best sort of customers to have.
Usually there is a new version out in late September or early October each year. So far, each version since Pro 6 where I started with their current products after leaving Lightroom has kept on getting better and better. They are pretty aggressive in trying to improve their products.
I think Glen is right although I suspect an Ultimate 11 may be due earlier than we think. So much competition about also at present and who will buy Ultimate 10 when 11 is released? I bought on July 1st at a “sale” price that was higher. Typically my timing is good. Not in this instance. Amazing what they are almost giving away. I’m now inclined to agree with those who speculate that a version 11 must be close.
Don’t forget the competition. Affinity Photo is way cheaper. This will have effect on the prices of other software. There is mostly a grace period for perchasing software. Mostly within a month or 2 month of the purchase you’ll get the latest version for free, if it comes out just after purchase. What with Acdsee,Affinity, On1raw, Photodirector etc Adobe must be feeling the pinch and I understand Luminar for Windows is due soon so another one to add to the bunch and let’s not forget another company quite aggressive with their pricing ‘Corel’ I bought their Psp 9x ultimate some time ago for a silly price is there a 10x due?.
I suppose the one’s that benefit from all this are us the users. And, then there is their Mac version that is still for sale, which does not work with the newer versions of the Mac OS. Of course, there is the new Beta Mac version which does work but is not for sale yet.

I went from Pro to Ultimate. The Ultimate is certainly the most complete.
Each version has something more. But maybe that is not enough. The most important thing is the optimization and overall speed increase of the program, which is usually done with the new version. At least I think so. Do you already have 9 or 10? To me the difference between U10 and U is not worth it It has smart erase which works on simpler context aware problems, a kind of crippled frequency separation function, a liquefy function, and more automatic “actions”.
It also has a few minor bugs still which, like U10 I’m sure will be corrected with updates – one of them is that the “e” key does not display the crop in the geometry tab. It does in U In all, If you don’t have U10, then get U If you have U10,unless you absolutely need any of the new functions, don’t.
If you have U9 – the the speed difference is absolutely significant, go for the upgrade. Likes 1. I have U9, and would love a speed bump. I find that PSU is faster with brushing, but otherwise feels about the same is U Smart Erase, Liquify, and Frequency Separation are also decent additions, though I find that Affinity Photo does a better job in all departments.
Shortcuts were badly needed and work great, that alone might make it worth the upgrade. Do you find using LR plugins easier with this over something like U9? So few are actually able to use in U9.
